3-Tab vs Architectural Shingles

In the lab, the 3-tab and architectural shingles we checked carry the same wind classes.[1, 2] The difference is in the warranty: at GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed and TAMKO, the 3-tab line is covered against wind up to 60 mph for 5 years, while their architectural lines start at 110 mph or more for 15 years.[3, 4, 5, 6]

Sources checked How we compare

3-tab

Three-tab shingles: one flat layer split into three equal tabs
A single flat layer with two cutouts

Pick 3-tab shingles if you need to match an existing 3-tab roof, and a warranty of 25 years with 60 mph wind coverage is enough for you.[3]

Architectural

Architectural shingles: two laminated layers with tabs of different sizes
Also called dimensional or laminated

Pick architectural shingles if you want a lifetime limited warranty, 10 years of non-prorated coverage and wind coverage of 110 mph or more.[3]

Same lab wind classes, different wind warranty

GAF lists ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H for its Royal Sovereign 3-tab shingle and the same two classes for its Timberline HDZ architectural shingle.[1, 2] Owens Corning lists the same classes for its Supreme 3-tab shingle.[10]

The warranty is where they split. Every 3-tab line below is warranted against wind up to 60 mph, and that coverage lasts 5 years. The architectural lines start at 110 mph or more and the coverage lasts 15 years. Higher speeds require the same brand's starter strips, ridge caps or extra nails.[3, 4, 5, 6]

Owens Corning and TAMKO also void wind coverage when the National Weather Service or another reputable agency records winds above the rated speed in the county; TAMKO also counts adjoining counties.[4, 6]

What "lifetime" means

A lifetime warranty is not unlimited. GAF applies it to single-family detached homes owned by individuals, for as long as the original owner (or one qualifying second owner) owns the home.[3] Owens Corning applies it to single-family detached homes where the roof owner lives in the home, for as long as that owner owns it.[4] After the non-prorated period, coverage is reduced each year. Tear-off and disposal are not covered under GAF's warranty, even in the first years.[3]

Installation

GAF lists 79 Royal Sovereign shingles and 316 nails per square (100 square feet), against 64 Timberline HDZ shingles and 256 nails.[1, 2, 9, 10]

Common questions

Are architectural shingles the same as dimensional shingles?

Yes. The National Roofing Contractors Association defines a dimensional shingle as Two or more strips of material laminated together; also called a laminated or architectural shingle.[8]

Do 3-tab shingles have a lower wind rating?

Not in the lab: GAF and Owens Corning list the same wind classes for their 3-tab shingles as for architectural ones. The wind warranty is lower: 60 mph for 5 years.[1, 3, 10]

Are 3-tab shingles still made?

Yes. GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed and TAMKO all list a 3-tab line in their current warranties.[3, 4, 5, 6]

How long is the full-coverage period?

For the brands above, 5 years on 3-tab lines and 10 years on standard architectural lines, before coverage starts to be prorated.[3, 4, 5, 6]
